Rebirth's Consequences Empty Rebirth's Consequences

Thu Apr 08, 2010 8:55 pm
The Anumian Renaissance, a term coined by Xalerion II after a golden age took place after the second colonization in Anumias. A third has come and gone, however, and the Anumian Empire has flourished into a powerhouse. The nation, demographically, had been made almost 80% self sufficient and even higher when directed toward food goods production. Agriculturally, thanks to a Invention Revolution, the crops had been plentiful for a long time through the use of terrain layering and new ways of sowing crops. Foreign and domestic trade was never more successful than at this time, a major buyer being the slightly smaller Commonwealth of Inkland.

However, even in this great age of rebirth from a Dark Age, war and strife were made. The Goblins who lay to the south, and Orcs to the north not only threatened the nations integrity, but shipping lanes in the northern Seas. The Anumian Sea however was heavily defended by the Imperial Navy. However, due to certain conditions, some cargo ships were sunk or plundered by seafaring Orcs from the north. The Anumians now tended to arm their ships with at least ten or more heavily armed soldiers from the national army.

However, the current stand on things is starting to swindle. Just ten warriors are no longer good enough. Orcs had started to take ships down with thirty or more, usually coming from their own junk crafts. Living in fear of another piracy, the Anumians had started to decrease their northern trade.

As the new Imperial Decree, Xalerion II passed a domestic law called the Bill of Oceanic Protection which made it so that any cargo ship or trading vessel had to travel with at least thirty well armed / armored soldiers who are trained especially for sea warfare. After the Bill was passed, soldiers were distributed among the various ships and the trade increased back to the normal rate once more. Front pages on the most prominent Anumian Newspaper, The Rokxbry Times were rife with articles on Orc attacks on sea and ships finally getting to their destinations. However, on the first day of Summer in that age, a non-verbal nor written declaration of war was sent to Anumias through the actions of a single Orc horde that attacked a different kind of ship.

The passenger ship named "Lusitanos" sailed for the nation of Inkland. Aboard were civilians of both nations, most of which were Anumians. On the night of June 3rd, an Orc Mariner horde attacked the ship, thinking it was a cargo vessel. They killed everyone indiscriminately and burned the ship down leaving any survivors to the high waves of the ocean. A single raft of floating debris from the Lusitanos landed upon the shore of Tarmena. Sharing the horrible news with the local Reichstros [High House of Anumian government], it was translated to Xalerion II at Citel Rhun, Anumias' Captial which stood atop the highest mountain of the land. Xalerion, furious over the Orc massacre announced war immediately against the Orcs of the north, and send the same news to the Inklandish Government.

The chambers of Foundations Thoroughfare were troubled by dark, hushed whispers. Teams of Dwarves in all matter of official uniform marched in logical panic, and yet the entire area remained a quiet expression of rationality and ceremonial calm. A team of diplomatic guards, garbed in white with luxurious gold trim and scarlet sash, escorted a Dwarf in a formal toga through a Lift to a waiting ship.

Along the way, the Times' headline screamed bloody murder: SHIP, CREW AND PASSENGERS SENT TO BOTTOM BY ORCISH PIRATES, it yelped at shocked passerby. The mood in the air, among the plebians, was one of private rage and contempt; a militia drill was going on with far more vigour and purpose than usual.

Upon arrival on Anumian shores, the diplomat silently presented a message to Anumias' postal service.

"By Will of Her Majesty the Queen, a Communique Adressed to our Faithful Allies of the Anumian Empire.

The Commonwealth does not tolerate attacks upon non-combatant vessels, nor civilians of any kind, and in accordance with our alliance to the Empire pledge our assistance in the total elimination of the local Orcish threat.

Our Legions approach our eastern frontiers and prepare to assault Waland, the home to a tribal confederation that is known to be in support of Orc efforts in the Capua Channel and elsewhere. This campaign now enters full implementation with the goal of a total capture of Waland and is occupation forevermore.

Though actions on the Continent may not yet be supported by Commonwealth military action, we offer our support to the Empire through enhanced Parliamentary Navy patrols of Channel waters. We reserve the right to take Goblin or Orc ships captured by the Parliamentary Navy, as well as their crews and cargo, as prizes and Royal property. In the event of a joint capture of a vessel, fifty percent of the revenue of sale shall go to each Alliance member.

We wish Anumias the best of luck in combating this problem and proclaim full solidarity with the Empire in the wake of this cowardly attack."

Rebirth's Consequences Empty Re: Rebirth's Consequences

With the proclamation of war by two allies, the stage was finally set. Xalerion mobilized his Northern Fleet, a armada by all accords, of around ten full battle ships. All were long, bearing a long spike acting as a ram and bowsprit to the ships. Ballistae lined the sides of the ships, as well as two heavy trebuchets on the main deck. Within their holds and on lower decks were supplies and various rooms for quarters and galley. Each had horrifying designs on the front in the belief that it would scare the enemy away, however much of it was old tradition.

The ships were loaded, each with deckhands and crew as well as full platoons of soldiers. Each ships held two platoons, making a total of one hundred soldiers. Altogether, one thousand Imperial Soldiers were set out, each commanded by a Special Unit called an Overlord. Oddly enough, the Overlords usually served as Imperial Guards to the Emperor, but their original purpose was to be a heavy shock trooper. All were categorized easily among the other soldiers, being the one with Dark Ore armor on and carrying ornate weapons.

Days after the declaration of war, the Northern Fleet set out, seen through the heavy mist of the ocean by it's small lit torches and the high Red and White rayed sun flag, used by the Imperial Navy. The soldiers aboard were always ready, proud and disciplined. Most, if not all, wore plate armor and carried a wide assortment of weapons from spears and pikes to bows and swords. Deckhands held fast to the ballistae and the trebuchet, as all happened to be skilled siege engineers.

And suddenly, through the thick mist laying over the ocean wide, shapes of smaller raft like ships approached. A tall tattered red flag stood above the boats, easily seen through the fog. Quietly and quickly, Anumian archers marched to the sides of the ships and knocked arrows. With another hand signal, strings were pulled and aimed. As the marred enemy ships drew near, the last signal was given, tearing loose a drone of "twangs" from many bowstrings. The vast majority of the arrows hit their marks, sending the silhouettes of Orcs tumbling into the water, the shafts of arrows protruding from their guts. The first battle of a long war had finally started. Far over the water, the yells of the soldiers and roars of the Orcs could be heard just as loud as the crashing and splashing of the burning rocks that launched from the trebuchets or the large bolts from ballista.

Rebirth's Consequences Empty Re: Rebirth's Consequences

The Orcish war boats began to spread out making it harder for the Anumians to hit them with their catapults, it was then when the larger vessels appeared from the fog. These ships had the strange Orc-apults on-board, machines that worked just like catapults but instead flung living Orc warriors at their enemies. When aimed properly and with some luck they proved to be very deadly, in short time the distinctive ''snap'' of the Orc-apults could be heard and were followed by the screaming ammo. Then the smaller ships began to close in on the Anumian vessels to unload their deadly cargo, a few were destroyed before they even made it to the ships but soon enough Orcs were piling onto Anumian ships. As the battle raged the slow and steady beat of the Orcish war drums began to echo from some of the larger boats and this only drove the Orcs into a rage that could not be quelled.

Rebirth's Consequences Empty Re: Rebirth's Consequences

The attack had started as soon as the Orcish ships were spotted in the water. Flaming ballistae bolts shot out, many lands with a splash in the water. However, it was undeniable when some hit, driving through the thin metal hulls of the Orc crafts with a piercing screech from the metal breaking. Magister Magi of the upper decks fired various spells at the invading Orcs. Anumian soldiers formed into highly disciplined ranks and drew their weapons. Spears and pikes with shields held the front lines, heavy swordsmen mid-center, and archers held the back lines, carrying crossbows and longbows alike. The trebuchets had started to fire back at the Orcs.

By order of the Major in charge of the Northern Fleet, Hieronymus Dilios, half of the ships sailed away from the battle and continued toward the first of the smaller islands that housed Orcish population. The other half would stay to deal with the sea attackers. After five minutes, the sea glowed with a horrifying light, which emanated from burning debris. Thus far, no Anumian craft fell. However, the Orcs deployed rope ladder grapples and started a forced abduction of ships. The soldiers prepared for melee combat.

The Orc commander saw defeat was unavoidable so he signaled to his magi.

''Ey! Git da spellz ready! A'ight?'' He shouted

''What evah youz sayz boss!'' The magi replied

They soon set about casting a very powerful spell that required all of them, this spell was ancient and how the Orcs acquired it is unknown.

***

As ship after ship fell before the Anumians the Orc casters finally finished casting the spell, with a great roar a whirlpool opened in the center of the battle. The vessels began to be pulled towards it but this was only the beginning of their troubles, great tentacles shot out of the water and proceeded to lay waste to the surrounding ships.

''Wez summunen da Kraken boyz!'' the commander shouted

As he said this his vessel was pulled under the water by the great creature, they had foolishly unleashed a terrible monster, one that had been locked away for thousands of years and with good reason.

Rebirth's Consequences Empty Re: Rebirth's Consequences

The bodies of orcs were strewn across the ship, only to be cast overboard by the deck hands and the help of Anumian soldiers. Not one ship had been sunk, nor commandeered by the likes of the horde. Hieronymus Dilios had ordered the full massacre of every orc, and that is just what was happening. The ships decks were colored in blood. The largest of the Anumian ships, the flagship "Yamatos", sailed at the forefront of the others.

The introduction of the Kraken was indeed a surprise, however, counter-measures were taken. Hieronymus ordered that the heavy weapons be risen from the ships hold, and that they open fire on the beast. To counter-act the threat of the whirlpool, anchors were lowered and the ballistae on board fired enchanted chain-hooks into the water, which sliced through as if it were butter. Magi on board kept the magic flowing through each chain as the large arrow head struck through the shallower ground deep under the sea. The ships lurched, but stopped moving.

Suddenly, as the ships stopped, the Kraken appeared in all of its fury. Hieronymus roared out commands to start the barrage. Flaming projectiles, whether it be ballistae bolts or arrow, fired into the flesh of the beast, earning a long terrible screech. The heavy weapons, such as the trebuchet and the new "Incineration Jet" were aimed at the beast. The latter of the two weapons, was a brand new invention of Anumias. It was made of Dark Ore, and controlled not by man power, but by the burning of water. Pressure, as it was discovered, pushed a liquid through a long pipe and out the end of a tapered barrel at high speeds. The liquid used... was oil. The machine took three engineers to use; one to aim and function the machine, one to pour in the flames adding pressure, and the last to fire flames into the jetting oil. This horrifying combo, was something none had seen yet before.

"FIRE" was commanded, and from the muzzle of the barrel shot out at such power, a large jet of oil. From a Magi's hands, jetted flames. The combination of oil and flame created an unholy monster of an attack, which was aimed and concentration directly onto the beast. Some of the flaming oil, much akin to liquid fire, was shot directly into the beasts gaping mouth, and more of it onto the creatures skin. The enchanted flames of the magi would never be released, even with introduction to water. A deafening roar emanated from the Kraken as it burned from the inside out, and vice versa. Only five minutes after the attack began, the thing was charred black, and any orc boats that lied close to it, were completely incinerated to the point of non-existence.

As the magi quelled the flames through their will, a gnawing silence took hold of the entire area. The whirlpool ceased, and the Kraken was unmoving. In a small boat, four soldiers sailed over the choppy waters and prodded the beast with long spears which pierced its burnt flesh. It was indeed dead, and rightfully so. Hieronymus Dilios sighed out of relief, the battle was over... for now.

As the Anumian pulled his spear back he felt the boat rock under him, something was alive in the water. Then the Kraken stirred, its massive tentacles rose up into the air and then came back down and curshed the small boat and all of its passengers. Then the monster realized it was no longer being controlled by its summoner and it vanished beneath the surface leaving behind the Anumian fleet and the wrecks of the Orcish vessels.
