Everything You Need To Know

Oh Lawd! It's a documentation topic--in a Redcoat RP! Yes, it's true. I planned something.
Here's the backstory for this universe of ours:
The State of the World:
Notes on Realism:
I may add to this as time goes on.
Here's the backstory for this universe of ours:
- Spoiler:
- In the year 1980, Lumiara had entered a new age of advancement and prosperity after the Astasi Peace Accords of 1960. The United States of Laurasia, having saved itself (some may say miraculously) from its economic woes, worked together with Valada, Great Arkova, Iratria, Hyperion, Selkis, Yamato and Arana towards a better future.
Naturally, nobody saw AN1-HL8 coming until it was too late.
An asteroid twice as large as the one that had wiped out the reptilian overlords of the Cretaceous period was headed for Lumiara. Given the size and speed of the projectile, methods used to redirect it away from Humanity and its Homeworld failed catastrophically; nuclear weapons resulted not in the stopping of the asteroid, but rather its fragmentation, resulting in a cosmic shotgun blast.
On Lumiara, the governments of Human nations tried successfully to seal away portions of the population in underground Habitats. As the rest of the human race saw the cosmic horror arrive, they drew a final collective breath as the dominant species.
The asteroid's main fragment struck in the ocean, near the Thousand Islands. Other fragments landed in virtually every part of the planet that faced the oncoming storm; the tsunamis, firestorms, and blast waves ended the lives of billions. Then came the dust as Man fell silent...
The dust and debris kicked up by the explosions and impacts cooled the global temperature, resulting in the total death of surface plant-life; accordingly, the remaining animals were left without sources of food. Only the smallest mammals survived, and the world became a wasteland.
In their underground cities, the knowledge of the past was kept alive by a dedicated few. The first survivors, armed with the seeds of the old world, stumbled out into a brave new one.
The State of the World:
- Spoiler:
- Three hundred years later, our story begins. The world at this stage has no wide-ranging mainstream political entities; the national identities of the past are gone, replaced by city-states, merciless highwaymen, roving bandits, raving bands of psychotics, and the occasional group of more agreeable nomads. The technology of the former world is put to good use where it may be found, facilitating life on Lumiara and some minor industrial activity. Much, however, is scavenged and cobbled together from various parts.
The Invader has also emerged, a bizarre species of crystalline plantlife with no allegory in the pre-Impacts biosphere. The reddish-brown weed grows well in Earth's soil, sucking it dry where it can take hold, and depleting the air of oxygen. Humans can keep it at bay, as can larger forests, but no part of the planet save the Garden Habitats are fully free of its grasp.
Plant and animal life has changed as a result of the Invader. New species have sprung up, and many old ones; in the heavily infested zones, known as the Wastelands, the perversion of wildlife is complete. Elsewhere, changes are more mundane. Man, of course, is not immune; there are far-off tribes of Reavers, so totally maddened as to have lost all humanity. On the mundane level, however, there are those who have been given enhanced abilities by Invader infestation; these individuals tend not to be much affected besides their particular power.
The poor quality of the atmosphere necessitates the use of Aeropacks outside of the Habitats and their immediate vicinity--machines that harvest oxygen for breathing. A few breaths must be taken every minute normally, and during vigorous activity, the mask must be worn constantly.
Notes on Realism:
- Spoiler:
- The science of HF's backstory is relatively sound right up until the Invader and its effects on Earth; that section is totally handwaved, along with the new wildlife. Both of these, however, are there for a better, and, more importantly, cooler world, so please, just nod and agree, and remember, it's just an RP, you really should just relax.
Technology in HF is heavily influenced by steampunk and dieselpunk, and is not always connected to reality. Remember this and be somewhat creative, but make sure what you're doing makes some sense. Also, your building materials will likely be mostly scrap metal--whole cities went down in the Impacts, remember.
A note on weapons: there's plenty in the wreckage, but most were stolen early on and are now in the hands of bandits and others. Buying weapons is possible, but the best stuff is in someone's hands. Also, ammunition is likely to be very rare.
I may add to this as time goes on.
