"HP Pavilion G60 please respond…..I repeat, HP Pavilion G60-443NR, respond at once. We have dispatched a Windows Update team for a routine checkup. Download was completed three minutes ago. Please confirm that the Update team has commenced installation protocols. HP Pavilion G-"

"Nothing's getting through to them. I don't understand. The internet connection checks out fine for the G60, but it's not responding. Should we open another channel?”

"I don't think so. Stand by for incoming scans.....look at this. There's a spike in activity. The G60 is sending out an abnormal amount of bytes for a system that appears to be idle."

"What are you saying then?"

"The system…I think it's infected."

Day One

You name the operating system, and I guarantee that I've been deployed there. From Windows 95 all the way to Windows 7, I've witness many systems get infected. Viruses, Spyware, Trojans, you name it. Sometimes we stop them before it gets too serious, but other times they fight back. We're a freeware outfit, so you'd reckoned we are just a bunch of pushovers. We can hold our ground just as fine as the big boys in the market.

What we are up against everyday aren't exactly sitting ducks with a big target painted on their backs. They're smart. Just when you think you've crippled a major operation, they somehow come back with a new name and a new look. On the lower end of the spectrum, these malware pretends to help the computer by trying to get the poor operator to buy their fake products. Others are just for the laughs, like the barrage of pornographic pop-ups. But once a while, you run into things like key loggers, and you'd definitely have remind yourself that this is ain't funny business.

We are soldiers of Spybot – Seek & Destroy, and that's exactly what we intend to do.

We've gotten a distress signal from a G36 Pavilion about a half hour ago. HQ promptly dispatched an assault team through internet download. However, the virus we're up against instantly detected their force entry and eliminated them. A lot of good men went down during that failed insertion, but we weren't going to give up. Spybot central deployed my team next, callsign Spybot 2. We were downloaded onto a nearby Sony Vaio. From there, we entered a USB flash drive and was safely transported onto the infected computer. Good thing for us that this happens to be the virus' blind spot. As we established a perimeter around the desktop, we were greeted by two resistance leaders of the G60.

"Welcome, Spybot commandos. I am the Captain of Firewall and this is the Commander of Windows Defender."

I nodded my head in acknowledgement to the two fighters when the Windows Defender Commander spoke.

"The situation is grim. This virus has taken over My Computer. I have forces fighting to the last kilobyte at the Control Panel. We've tried to get access to the Program Files and eliminate the infected files, but they dug themselves too deep. We tried to enter safe mode, but the system was not responding. Soon, programs started disappearing. CCleaner was the first to go. It got to the point where we were going to System Restore...except they got to it before we did. We're hopelessly overrun."

"Do you have any third party anti-virus software on site?" I said to them. "While my team is still installing, you must contact them and issue a quarantine order of the system."

"Well, we were reinforced by a Norton Security Team, but you know how it is," said the Firewall Captain. "Once our subscription ended, they packed up and left. They won't help us now."

"Those no good mercenaries," I said. "No worries. My team is here to stay until the job is done. We'll locate the threat. We'll pull through this."

“Those no good mercenaries,”

This one made me laugh. This is good. Also,

My favorite ones are the malware that “pretends” to help the computer, but is actually trying to get the poor operator to buy their fake products.

These were the first ones to screw up my computer and when I learned to use Super AntiSpy. That and constant pop-ups.
